This is the cake I just finished making ( Jeez, it's 4:00 a.m.!) for the baby shower, on Sunday. When my sister and I were looking for ideas for a cake, we saw one like this online. Despite never having made anything like this before, I said, "I can do that..." Mind you, I have never used fondant in my life, let alone made it myself! Plus, I have never made a cake for any sort of event, other than my own, here at the house. Needless to say, I was terrified and wondered if maybe I should have just kept my big mouth shut! LOL
I started working on this yesterday morning. I made the fondant and with stopping so many times for the kids and hubs, it took until afternoon before I even got that finished. Then I baked the round layers of the cake and the "butt" portion, using the extra batter for cupcakes for all those big eyed kids hanging around the kitchen because they smelled cake baking. While the cakes cooled, I made dinner and then the little ones had their baths.
It was after 10 p.m. before I got back to work. I covered all the white portions with fondant first. Then I made Krispie's treats and formed the feet. While those set up, I worked on kneading the different colors into the rest of the fondant. The rest is history, as they say. I think the worst part of the whole process was the kneading and standing on my feet for so long. I have some of bone and joint problems that are agonizing. They were especially bad today as rainy weather moved into the area.
At any rate, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I think every parent has seen this view at some point when their kids were small. I hope my sister and the expectant mother like the cake.
