Today is Sunday, which got me to thinking about dresses. Outside, it is a nice Spring day, which got me to thinking about lightweight dresses. You know, cute sundresses etc... And this reminded me to wonder about something that has been bugging me for some time now...
What happened to the slip? I remember, even as a young girl of 10 or so, always wearing a silky slip under my skirts and dresses. These days, it seems that hardly anyone ever wears a slip. When buying dresses for my girls at some of the more popular stores, I couldn't even find slips for them, period. When I was frustrated and explained to my daughters what I was looking for, the looked at me like I had three heads. They didn't wear slips and neither did any of their friends. Was this something I made up? LOL
In my opinion, slips play at least two very important roles. First, they make skirts and dresses hang much nicer and keep them from clinging to the legs of the wearer. I'm sure that most of us have seen some poor gal with her skirt sticking between her legs, due to the static electricity of her pantyhose. Secondly and probably most important, they help maintain a degree of modesty. Keeping the wearer from putting on a peep show through her skirt. The lightweight fabrics of Spring/Summer are especially bad for this. I can't even count the times that I have seen grown women, at cookouts etc..., with the sun shining right through their skirt. It makes me embarrassed for them. But does one point this out to the person? I wouldn't even know how to begin to approach the subject. So I do like everyone else attending the function and pretend I don't notice.
I'm all for the return of the slip. Opinions?
I guess I must live in the dark ages, either that or I haven't been slip shopping in a LONG time! Maybe both. lol
ReplyDeletePeople really don't wear slips anymore???
Anyhoo... thanks for stopping by my blog and participating in the giveaway! I'm totally amazed that so many people were interested in getting free cookies in the mail. lol, who knew? I'm sorry to say that you didn't win, but I WILL be posting the recipe tomorrow in case you wanted to try it out. :)
I always feel bad for the woman I see wearing a skirt/dress that I can see straight through. I always assumed that they weren't aware of the sheerness of their clothing or prehaps putting on a slip, slipped their mind! I really really hope women are not wearing slips on purpose!
ReplyDeleteI love wearing sun dresses and before leaving the house I always check to see if a slip is needed!
I agree! They've become so hard to find for little girls now - about the only time you ever do see some is around Easter.
