Was My Face Red! Wednesday

Welcome to Was My Face Red! Wednesday! Most of us have, at one time or another, done something so humiliating, that we wished the floor would open up and consume us. Let's swallow our pride and share those moments with others! Our shame was not in vain, if it can put a smile on someone face! You tell me yours, and I'll tell you mine...

Everyone is welcome to participate. Just leave the link to your WMFR post below.

Many years ago, when I was a young teenager, I was scheduled for surgery to have my eardrum repaired. It had ruptured after a bad infection that went untreated for a couple of years. At this time, I was living with my eldest sister and her family. She had a very busy work schedule and a small son at home and would be unable to stay with me at the hospital. So, the evening before, she signed me in the hospital, made sure I was settled, and left for the night.

Let me tell you, that was a long, depressing night. Back then, you had to pay, if you wanted the TV turned on in your room, and we couldn't afford that. So, I sat there, passing the time by reading hospital brochures, the ingredients in my miniature can of Shasta, stuff like that. Eventually, I began reading over my surgery instructions. I was shocked to read that I needed to remove my fingernail polish before surgery, as it was considered unsanitary. Bye Bye bright red nail polish! I was even more shocked to read that I would not be allowed to wear my underwear into the O R . HUBBAWHA?! I thought it was my ear they were operating on!

So anyway, I buzz the nurse and ask if they happen to have nail polish remover on hand. They didn't. Thus, I sat there for a long while scraping the nails on one hand with the nails of the other, until I had removed every little speck of red polish. Satisfied, I went to sleep.

The next morning, before rolling me into surgery, the nurse went over a check list of things I could not wear into surgery etc... I was able to answer "NO" to each question and passed with flying colors. They wheeled me back and I was soon hooked up to the medication that would knock me out. As I was waiting for the big TKO, I observed that the nurses were wearing jewelry, make up, nail polish ( it was clear but still that was a total rule breaker!) "No fair!", I thought. "I'll bet those hags are wearing underwear too! Shouldn't they be required to be as 'sanitary' as the patient?" Before is passed out, my eyes wandered to the foot of the operating table, there, sticking out from beneath the warm sheet they had given me, looking like a string of Christmas lights amidst all that white, were my BRIGHT RED toenails!

  1. LOL, I've never understood the whole "no undergarments" when having surgery. I couldn't wear a bra when I had nose surgery. Not sure what one has to do with the other.

That's hilarious about the nail polish. Did they notice??

  2. Well, if they noticed, they never mentioned. They probably had a laugh riot, while I was dead to the world LOL

Yeah, that no undergarments thing is unreal, or at least it should apply to every single person who is present in the operating room...

  3. LOL! I never understood that either. If you are having surgery on your ear why can't you have undies on? It makes no sense to me at all!!! What does your crotch and your ear have to do with each other?

  4. I thought the nail polish thing was because they needed to be able to see your nail beds that can change color when bad things happen like lack of oxygen and so forth. Hmmm, I wonder if that's true? Anyway, funny account of your experience.

  5. Kellie, I always heard the same thing about being able to see the nail beds during surgery. If we both heard it, it must be true.

Hospital stays are much more comfortable now. You can watch tv for hours!
